Fruit ripening time: March - April
Rated very highly in apple tastings as an excellent flavoured apple. Esopus Spitzenburg is crisp and juicy, with a complex, sweet-tart flavour, described as spicy and fruity.
A medium sized apple with yellow skin that will colour up to a lovely deep red on the sunny side. The skin can be a little waxy, but it does not deter from the flavour. The flesh is cream in colour, dense and firm.
Uses: Exceptional fresh eating. Also excellent for cooking as the slices become tender but hold their shape, also good for dried apple and cider. The fruit have very good keeping qualities, and the flavours develop as the apple ages.
Pollinators: Braeburn, Browns Apple, Cleopatra, Cripps Pink, Cox’s Orange Pippin, Cornish Aromatic, Democrat, Five Crown Pippin, Fuji, Five Crown Pippin, Gala, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, Kingston Black, Northern Spy, Pine Gold Pippin, Red Delicious, Splendour, Tydeman's Early Worcester, Worcester Pearmain, Yarlington Mill and white flowering Crabapples.
